Meeting Notes: Sunday, 2 November 2008

Attending:  Kate, Larry, Dave, Joy, Joe, Michelle, Mary Pat, Lou, and Nick

We opened with a prayer, led by Fr. Lou, where each of us completed the statement
For the sake of peace, I hope that...

Pax Christi USA has begun publishing a series of periodicals called A New Moment for Nuclear Disarmament.  Mary Pat passed out copies.  All members are encouraged to subscribe.  We will be reading and discussing the current issue in December.

We had an extended discussion of the politics of fear, especially as used by the current administration.  These three books were suggested:
Tom Cordaro, Be Not Afraid: An Alternative to the "War on
Terror" (Pax Christi, 2008)
James Douglas, JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why
 It Matters (Orbis, 2008)
Jane Mayer, The Dark Side: The Inside Story of How the War on
Terror Turned into a War on American Ideals
(Doubleday, 2008)

Dave also recommended that everyone read Kennedy's address at American University from June 1963.

This was followed by a discussion of hope.
(Those who have lived through such times should share their experience with the younger generation so that the younger generation has hope for a brighter future, rather than nostalgia for the past.)

We discussed ideas for local action and education, including an information campaign in churches and schools and adopting the tactics used by the "Dark Side."  Joe will share his information on the Knights of Columbus campaign with the "pro-life" movement (contra FOCA).  Mary Pat will share her information on the Dominicans' letter writing campaign.  Larry will research contacts for Faith Magazine. We will look into working more closely with Pax Christi Muskegon.

We resolved to remain actively seized of the matter.
Watch this blog for response to the election and any election irregularities.
